All Eyes on Me

16'‘ x 20’’ portrait of Tupac Shakur in antique frame

Purchased for The City of Tacoma Municipal Art Collection

The rose that grew from concrete

This image captures pop, social, and political icon Tupac Shakur at a moment when he was trying to assert control over a situation that was completely beyond his control. Surrounded by photographers and paparazzi, Tupac faced an overwhelming mix of emotions including hate, love, anger, fear, excitement, and paranoia. In response, he acted with raw intensity and brashness, walking aggressively toward the crowd, clearing his path with waving arms and launched spit. It was a visceral reaction, a way to physically express his disgust at the parasitic intrusion of the media and to reclaim a measure of power in a space that had been entirely imposed upon him.

This work is my interpretation of that moment. The geometric shapes are sharp and harsh, delivering the angst and aggression that defined the scene. The vivid colors and distorted image create a modern and futuristic atmosphere, reflecting the intensity and unpredictability of the encounter. Every line and hue is meant to translate the chaos, the tension, and the energy of Tupac’s response.

Juxtaposed against this contemporary tension is the opulence and classical grace of the metal framing, referencing timelessness, permanence, and a sense of structured dignity. The contrast between the aggressive, chaotic imagery and the refined, almost regal frame mirrors the duality of Tupac himself, a figure of rebellion and vulnerability, of aggression and thoughtfulness, of raw humanity and iconic myth.

Through this composition, the piece aims to convey the complexity of the muse, highlighting not just the moment captured in the image but the emotional and cultural weight that surrounds it. The tension between chaos and control, vulnerability and defiance, modernity and classicism all come together to create a visual homage to Tupac’s enduring presence and influence.
